Diet Tips To Lower Your Cholesterol Levels Naturally

By : Nishanth Reddy

Are you gaining weight? Does this make you worry about your cholesterol level? Do you feel like you need to do something about your eating habits particularly your cholesterol diet?

What is the first thing to consider in a low cholesterol diet? Knowing the purpose of a low cholesterol diet will make you adhere to it more sincerely. Then before indulging in any strict diet, low cholesterol diet included, you have to know why some foods are safe to eat and why some are not. However, a lifestyle change that would include a good cholesterol diet as a first step would work best.

The basic of cholesterol lowering diet is the decrease in the total intake of saturated fat, calories, and cholesterol in the body to decrease weight. These types of foods are mainly fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables have very high fiber content; this soaks cholesterol like sponge and disposes it out of the body. Apples, oranges and pears are high fiber foods. This includes oats and carrots. Pasta, whole grains and potatoes are samples of complex carbohydrates.

If you want to go on a cholesterol diet you should minimize your intake of the day’s total saturated fat calorie by 7% and fat by 25-35 percent. Limit your sodium intake by 2400 milligrams daily.

Remember, cholesterol lowering diet and maintaining a daily exercise are major factors in lowering the cholesterol level.

Here are some tips on cholesterol diet approaches:

•Taking fiber-rich foods such as whole grains as your primary source of carbohydrates. This should go hand in hand with an increase intake of fresh fruits and vegetables such as berries, oranges, apples, pears, grapes, bell peppers, broccoli, kale, cauliflower, tomatoes, dark leafy greens celery, squash and eggplant among others.

•Staying away from saturated fats which are mostly found in animal foods such as meat, poultry and dairy products is a good cholesterol diet. Opt for unsaturated fats instead, specifically omega-3 fatty. Good sources of these would be the vegetable and fish oils.

•Source out protein from soy protein, poultry, and fish instead of meat.

•Major lifestyle change as a part of cholesterol diet would mean weight control, exercise, and quitting smoking.

If you want to dine out and still stick on your cholesterol diet, here are some tips for you to follow so that you will be able to maintain your cholesterol diet.

•Find out which restaurants have low saturated fat and have a low cholesterol menu.

•Sharing your dish with your companion or taking some home is advisable, better yet, you can also ask for appetizer-size servings or a side dish.

•Ask to separate the gravy, butter, rich sauces and dressings. You can control your cholesterol and saturated fat much easier that way.

•Ask the extras (salad, fries, baked potato) to be left off or substitute them.

•If you are craving for pizza, order the one that has vegetable toppings (green pepper, onions, and mushrooms) instead of meat or extra cheese. Or to make it easier for you, order it with half of the cheese or no cheese at all.

•If your dining on a fast-food restaurant, order salads, grilled skinless chicken sandwiches (fried and breaded are a no no), regular-sized hamburgers or roast beef sandwiches. Avoid large burgers, sandwiches and french-fries.

•Choose the dishes that are cooked on a low cholesterol method (broiled, steamed, au jus, garden fresh, baked, roasted, poached, tomato juice, dry boiled and lightly saturated)

•Be mindful of dishes that are high in saturated fat and cholesterol. (butter sauce, fried, crispy, creamed, au gratin, au fromage, escalloped, parmesan, hollandaise, béarnaise, marinated, stewed, basted, sautéed, casserole and pastry crust)

Take note that if you lose weight, your calorie needs will also be lowered. It will decrease the amount of saturated fat and the fat that you will be able to consume on the cholesterol diet.

If you are having a hard time of making changes with cholesterol lowering diet, consult a nutritionist or dietitian so that you can work up some sample diets.

Top 7 Tips To Treat And Prevent Asthma Attacks

by Raymond Lee

Some people describe asthma as feeling like they are trying to breathe though a straw. The description fits perfectly, because during an attack, airways in the lungs squeeze shut, making it difficult to draw in air. At the same time, the narrowed airways become inflamed and filled with mucus, stifling the airways even further. Asthma can be serious - even fatal. But if you can take care of yourself, asthma isn't cause for alarm. Here are some ways to prevent future episodes.

1. Max Out On Magnesium
This essential mineral helps relax the smooth muscles that line airways. People who were getting the most magnesium from foods were the least likely to have wheezing and supersensitive airways. Choose whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds as your best magnesium sources.

2. Consider Antioxidant Protection
Vitamins C and E, the trace mineral selenium and beta-carotene, a pigment found in orange and dark green leafy vegetables, all seem to offer some protection to sensitive lungs. You may want to consider consuming 1,000 to 2,000 milligrams of vitamin C, 400 international units of vitamin E and up to 200 micrograms of selenium a day through diet and supplements.

3. Declare War On Insects
Two kinds of bugs - dust mites and cockroaches - are well-known asthma aggravators. People actually inhale microscopic cockroach parts and dust mite feces, which sets off attacks. It is impossible to get rid of dust mites, which are found in every house and are kicked up through normal household activity. So minimizing their presence by encasing mattresses and pillows in plastic covers and washing your bed linens frequently in hot water. Banishing cockroaches can be a real hassle, too. Keep food in bug-proof tins or the refrigerator, clean up crumbs immediately and never leave cat or dog food out. Fix leaks so that there are no damp spots in your house, since mites require high humidity to live.

4. Stop The Acid
The same backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus that causes heartburn can bring on asthma, especially if you are lying down. People who do a lot of coughing at night are most likely to have this problem. To avoid acid-induced asthma, you can take acid-suppressing drugs, forgo late-night foraging and shed excess weight.

5. Relax With Massage
In one study people with asthma who got weekly 15-minute upper body massages reported drops in chest tightness, wheezing, pain and fatigue. Massage may make you more aware of the stress in your life, and awareness is, for most people, the first step towards reducing stress. Stress often makes asthma symptoms worse.

6. Breathe Better With Yoga
Try exhaling for twice as long as you inhale. This is a yoga breathing technique. To do this easily, breathe in normally, then exhale normally, but as you come to what seems like the end of your exhalation, continue for a bit longer without forcing out the breathe.

7. Turn Off The Fireplace
As cozy as fireplaces and woodstoves may be, they spew pollutants into indoor air. If you are having trouble controlling asthma, you are better off not using either of these in your house.

How To Snack Healthfully

A lot of people know that snacking on nutritious food helps you avoid overeating by curbing cravings, but research shows that eating the right way between meals can also improve your mood and help you stay sharp.

• Don't snack hungry. Rate your hunger on a scale from one to ten, ten being famished. Have a snack when you're at a six (slightly hungry) and stop when you're at a four (slightly satisfied). This ensures that you'll eat a controlled amount. If you're too hungry when you snack, you're much more likely to overdo it.

• Choose wisely. Make your snack as nutrient-dense as possible, and limit it to 150 calories. Look for foods that are high in fiber, lean protein, or unsaturated fat, like cottage cheese with fresh fruit, half an apple with peanut butter, or a couple of high-fiber crackers with almond butter. Whenever possible, choose fresh foods such as fruits, vegetables, and nuts, which tend to have more nutrients and fewer preservatives than packaged food. Snacks that have a lot of sugar or starchy carbohydrates (candy or potato chips, for example) will give you a quick burst of energy, but then you'll crash and end up feeling even more lethargic after.

• Plan ahead. If you decide in the morning exactly what you're going to snack on that afternoon, you're a lot less likely to eat something sugary from the vending machine when you're ravenous at 4 o'clock. Bring a couple of snacks with you when you leave for the day—an apple, a yogurt, raw almonds, or even edamame.

• Satisfy your cravings. If you long for a particular kind of food, have a small, healthy version of it as a snack. For example, if you're dying for a slice of pizza, spread marinara sauce on a high-fiber cracker and sprinkle it with low-fat mozzarella cheese, then put it in the microwave for 30 seconds to a minute. It's a great pizza fix. Then, for dinner, you're more likely to have grilled fish with steamed vegetables.

• Have a seat. Make an event out of a snack. Sit down, put the food out on a plate, and drink a glass of water or cup of herbal tea. This will force you to eat slowly, and your mini meal will feel more substantial.

Healthy Eating For A Healthy Body

Healthy eating means many things to many people, and everyone has different goals for the perfect diet. The key to following a healthy diet is to find a diet you can stick with for the rest of your life. A diet should not be simply a temporary change in the way you life, eat and exercise. Rather, it should be a permanent change that you can live with day in and day out, year in and year out.

For some people, a healthy diet can be as simple as increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables in the daily diet. For others, a radical change, involving strict control of fat and cholesterol, may be required.

Of course what is needed will depend on the goal of each individual. The serious runner in search of greater conditioning will of course have different goals than the couch potato who is concerned about the possibility of heart disease.

Even though every person will different goals when it comes to healthy eating, the basic tenets of healthy eating are the same. The most important thing is to eat a good variety of foods, while eating less of the bad stuff and more of the good.

That may sound like an oversimplification, but it really is that easy. Putting that simple concept into proactive, however, is the hard part. Everyone wants to eat healthier, but there are so many temptations in today’s world that healthy eating can be very difficult. The key is to make healthy choices as appealing as unhealthy ones.

One way to make healthy foods appealing is buying a wide variety of exotic fruits at the local supermarket. There are probably varieties of fruits and vegetables at your local grocery store that you never even heard of before. Why not make your next trip to the grocery store an adventure by sampling these exotic offerings?

Experimenting with new recipes is another great way to bring excitement and adventure to healthy eating. A quick perusal of your favorite low fat or healthy eating cookbook will likely present you with many fun and exciting recipes to try. Often a new cookbook, or a couple of new recipes are all it takes to spur a healthier lifestyle.

It is also important to know that eating healthier does not necessarily mean making a radical change. There are very simple things you can do, such as cutting the skin off your chicken breast, or trimming the fat from your favorite steak, that can result in significant fat reductions and health improvements. Dieters should not overlook the importance of these small changes when seeking a healthier diet.

Other examples of small changes resulting in healthier eating include:
- Replacing whole milk with skim or 2%, both in recipes and for drinking
- Snacking on sorbet or low fat frozen yogurt instead of premium ice cream
- Spraying pans with nonfat cooking spray instead of using butter or margarine
- Replacing high fat cuts of meat with leaner ones
- Eating more low fat fish and less red meat
- Using egg substitutes, the kind made from egg whites, in recipes, meals and baking

There are probably hundreds of other such tips, and they can add up to significant health improvements, whether your goal is to get fit, lose weight or improve your level of health. No matter who you are or what your current level of fitness, eating a healthier diet and losing weight may be easier than you think.

In the end, eating a healthy diet, improving your level of fitness, and managing your consumption of fat and cholesterol boils down to common sense. Depriving yourself of your favorite foods can be counterproductive to a long term dietary change. Deprivation leads inevitably to cravings, and that can start a vicious cycle of dieting and splurging.

It is best to think of healthy eating as a marathon rather than a sprint. The goal of any healthy eating program should be to make easy, lifelong changes in the way you shop, cook and dine. Only by making changes that you can follow for a lifetime will you truly be able to enjoy a healthy diet.

by: Van Whitsett

Did you know that menstrual cramps is the single greatest cause of lost school and working hours among women?

Also known as dysmenorrhea, menstrual cramps are the cause of an estimated 140 million hours of lost school and work. However, you do not have to live in pain. Below are some helpful tips that can help women during this particularly painful time of the month.

1. Try to eat smaller, more frequent meals. A lot of food causes blood sugar to rise and fluctuate. instead of eating three large meals, eat five or six small meals a day, each about two and a half hours apart.

2. Exercise. Exercise can help alleviate menstrual cramps by raising the level of beta-endorphins, which are chemicals in the brain associated with pain relief. Studies have shown that beta endorphins have a positive effect on mood and behavior.

3. Try an over the counter Ibuprofen. Advil, Nuprin, and Motrin IB all contain Ibuprofen, which is one of the best pain relievers around. 200 milligrams every four to six hours is the recommended dosage, or twice that if symptoms warrant.

4. Oral contraceptive pills: Have been found to decrease the amount of menstrual tissue formed and lower the pain level (amplitude) of the uterine contractions.

5. Mefenamic acid: Also found over the counter, effectively relieves severe menstrual pain while also reducing heavy menstrual bleeding, easing menstrual migraine, and easing the physical and emotional symptoms of premenstrual syndrome.

6. Reduce salt intake: To prevent water retention that causes bloating. Also, avoid liquor and other alcoholic beverages to reduce headaches.

7. Learn to relax. Rest, sleep and relaxation exercises can help reduce the pain and discomfort of menstrual cramps. A relaxing massage or bath with oil made with chamomile, lavender, marjoram, ginger and/or clary sage. They are aromatic and can aid in relaxation.

Never surrender to pain. There are steps you can take to help alleviate the pain and discomfort. So, the next time you experience any painful menstruation symptoms, be sure to try these tips.

Advantages of Taking Fiber-Health

By: David Jones

One advantage of a high starch diet is that it will almost automatically be high in fiber unless the foods are refined or highly processed.

Fiber (formerly called roughage) is a general term that refers to the substances in food resisting digestion. The amount of fiber in a food is determined by its plant source and the amount of processing it undergoes. In general the more a food is processed, the more the fiber is broken down or removed and the lower the fiber content.

The fiber content shown on food labels is usually listed as either dietary fiber or crude fiber. Dietary fiber is the actual residue of plant food that resists digestion in the human body. Crude fiber is the residue of plant food following a harsh chemical digestive procedure in the laboratory; 1 gram of crude fiber equals 2 to 3 grams of dietary fiber.

There are two kinds of fiber: soluble fiber, which dissolves or swells in hot water, and insoluble fiber, which does not dissolve in water. Each plant food usually contains a mixture of fiber types.

Soluble Fiber

Soluble fiber appears to have several favorable effects. Because it forms gel in water, it adds bulk and thickness to the contents of the stomach and may slow emptying, thus prolonging the sense of fullness and possibly helping dieters control their appetites. Studies have shown that soluble fiber lowers blood cholesterol levels. The results of 10 studies reported in the journal of the american medical association 40 showed that eating oat bran cereal or oatmeal every day can lower blood cholesterol by an average of 2% to 3%. Diets high in carbohydrates and fiber, especially soluble fiber, improve blood glucose control, lower insulin requirements, and decrease blood cholesterol and blood pressure in people with diabetes. Soluble fiber also slows the absorption of sugars from the small intestine, another benefit for those with diabetes.

Good sources of soluble fiber are fruits, vegetables, and grains. Specific foods include prunes, pears, oranges, apples, dried beans, cauliflower, zucchini, sweet potatoes, and oat and corn bran.

Insoluble Fiber

Insoluble fiber adds bulk to the contents of the intestine. This speeds the transit time of a meal's remnants through the small and large intestines. This in turn appears to offer the important health benefits.

Healthy Eating and Super Foods - 4 Health Benefits of Watermelons

By: Yuki Shoji

Think back to when you were a child and when during the summer months, the pinnacle of cookouts and family gatherings was always the cold juicy watermelon that was for desert. When you were young, eating watermelon was about taste, but now that you're older it's more than just taste that should inspire you to eat lots of watermelon each year when the season arises. This is because watermelons have tremendous health benefits that anyone who lives a healthy lifestyle should be determined to take advantage of every year. With that said, let's take a closer look at some of these health benefits this fruit has to offer.

Health Benefit of Watermelons #1: Lycopene

Lycopene is an antioxidant found in most red-colored fruits, with the exception of a few, such as strawberries. Scientific studies have shown that Lycopene reduces the risk of prostate cancer and heart disease in people, especially men, the sex most prone to these diseases. Men who eat a diet high in lycopene are much less likely to suffer a heart attack then men who don't.

Health Benefit of Watermelons #2: Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 is an important attribute to have in a healthy diet because it promotes chemicals in the brain that help people to cope with anxiety and panic, two psychological disorders that are on the rise in America today.

Health Benefit of Watermelons #3: Vitamin C

If you thought oranges were the only fruit that could provide you with Vitamin C, think again. Vitamin C is important to not only being healthy, but remaining attractive all your life. Vitamin C boosts the immune system so that you get sick less often and it also slows down aging and medical conditions such as cataract.

Health Benefit of Watermelons #4: Vitamin A

Vitamin A works much like Vitamin C, in that it helps boost immunity, but it also help your body fight off infection. It also prevents blindness.

As you can see, eating watermelon is almost tantamount to taking a multivitamin every morning, but with a much better taste. Watermelons are seasonal, which means that they are not available all year long, like fruits such as apples, which also means that when they are in season you should make sure and take advantage.

When you go to the store to purchase one you want to try and find one that is ripe and ready to eat. The best way to do this is to knock on the outside of the rind. If you hear a hollow sound then melon is ready to eat, but if you hear solid thud put it back. The fruit is over ripe and you won't be getting very good flavor from it. Buy you water melon and eat it within the first few days of getting it home. Everything about it is healthy, and in addition, it won't leave you feeling over stuffed if you eat too much.

So the next time the weather becomes warmer and summer is approaching, don't forget about watermelons. Eat up and get the extra boost they will add to your healthy lifestyle.

Beauty Secrets: Be Beautiful Now

by Nellie Jamesons

Today beauty is associated with a beautiful body. From TV commercials to fashion magazines, thin women are in and those who are overweight are out. However, more than half of the population is overweight. This problem is affecting not only women but men of all ages.

A healthy lifestyle not only increases a person’s energy but it can also enhance their appearance. Most people who are overweight do not watch their diet, and that leads to unwanted obesity.
Here are some tips to follow to achieve a beautiful body through proper dieting:

1. Eat high-fiber, low fat foods such as salads, vegetables, and pasta.

2. Eat small amounts of food every two hours instead of having a big breakfast, lunch, or dinner. By doing this, the metabolism will increase and burn calories faster. Do not skip a single meal as there is less temptation to eat junk food when the stomach is full.

3. Instead of cornflakes, try oatmeal for breakfast to lower your cholesterol level. Eating oatmeal for breakfast keeps a person from wanting snacks before lunch because it is rich in fiber.

4. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. It helps cut the appetite and improves the appearance of the skin.

5. Avoid alcoholic beverages especially beer; instead, try fruit juices or iced tea.

6. Avoid sweets. Chocolate specifically can ruin the diet. Avoiding it does not mean total abstinence from it though - have some once a week!

7. Instead of eating meat, try fish. Eating a large amount of fish does not make somebody fat. When you are in good health and take care of yourself on the inside, it's bound to radiate to the outside! Find out more about fat workouts that keeps you in good, healthy shape.

8. Abstain from eating after 6 PM. This has worked for many people. The idea behind it is to keep food away from the body when its metabolism is at its slowest state. For people who cannot totally eliminate food during this time eat yogurt, cabbage, fish, or green salad.

9. Lose weight sensibly. Do not keep the stomach hungry. It is a common belief that skipping meals is a sure way to lose weight; but that is just plain wrong! Instead, try eating fruit like watermelon, papaya, etc.

10. Avoid frying with oil: try to use non-stick cookware to cut down the oil or use paper towels to remove excess oil.

11. Instead of whole milk, put skim milk in your coffee or tea. There is no difference in the taste, just the number of calories. Looking great means feeling great!

Beauty Care Tips

By: Ricky Hussey

Try a small portion of tryptophan. Tryptophan is an amino acid that helps the body produce the sleep hormones serotonin and melatonin. Bananas, milk, peanut butter, whole grains, and turkey all contain tryptophan. Take advantage of these natural sedative powers and eat a small amount of one or more of these foods an hour or two before bedtime.

Get herbal help

Valerian root, kava, passionflower, chamomile, catnip, verbena, and skullcap all have tension-relieving and sedative powers. Try an herbal infusion brewed with one of these herbs. If you're one of those small-bladdered types (no judgments here, I'm one too), avoid herbal teas or other drinks just before bedtime. After all, what's the good of being knocked out if you're going to be roused by a full bladder a few hours later?

Scented sleep

Essential oils have long been used by aroma therapists as natural sedatives. My personal favorite is lavender oil, which I sprinkle on my sheets and which never fails to knock me out. Other oils to try include chamomile and sandalwood. Try scenting your bedroom with oils, or try making yourself a scented sleep pillow like the ones you see in aroma therapy and gift boutiques, by stuffing a small pillow with a blend of relaxing dried hops, chamomile, and lavender.

Bath therapy

Warm water has a soothing effect on your body and mind. It can ease stress and lower the body's temperature, which in turn induces sleepiness. Avoid hot water (which can speed heart rate and respiration, as well as cause sweating) and time your bath to within an hour of bedtime. Throw chamomile tea bags into the water or add a few drops of relaxing lavender.

Trade mass media for a book

Instead of watching heart-pumping TV shows, listening to the radio, or reading newspapers and news magazines, opt for a relaxing book before bedtime. Violence stimulating music, disturbing news - all these signal the body to produce adrenaline and won't help you get to sleep.

Don't just lie there!

If you find yourself wide awake, get up, go to another room, turn on a dim light, and read until you feel ready to fall asleep, According to sleep researchers, remaining wide awake in bed "trains" your body to associate your bed with wakefulness - not something you want to do.

According to a survey conducted by the National Sleep Foundation, the average American woman sleeps only 6 hours and 41 minutes per weeknight. The reasons for this? Small bladders, headaches, hormonal upsets due to menstruation, pregnancy, lactation, and menopause, as well as snoring or cover-hogging partners, and disruptions from children are all cited.

Effective Back Pain Exercises

by Lesley Lyon

The answer to a healthy back is appropriate exercise. The problems associated with back pain can be minimized with exercises. It is widely known that regular exercises will improve the appearance and health in general, but very few realize the benefits that good physical conditioning can have on their back pain.

The benefit of exercises for the back depends on the following three key principles:

To attain satisfactory aerobic fitness. To focus part of the exercising on the muscle groups that supports the back.To avoid exercises that cause heavy stresses on the back
The right kind of exercise program helps in keeping the back pain under control and can make it easier to continue doing the daily chores. A break from vigorous exercise can be taken if the pain becomes worse. A Doctor or physiotherapist can be consulted before starting an exercise program for deciding on the type of exercises that can be done to relieve back pain and to stay fit.

Warm up is important before exercise and deep inhaling has to be repeated before each exercise. Regular exercise helps a lot and if it is skipped for a day, unavoidably walking can compensate it, to some extent.

Exercises to strengthen the back and hip muscles:
Wall slides exercise helps to strengthen the back and hip muscles. Leg muscles also get relieved. By standing against a wall on the back, try to slide down with knees bent. The bend should be 90 degrees and count till 5. Then come back to standing posture. This has to be continued for five times.

Raising the leg also helps in strengthening back and hip muscles. Lay down on the stomach. Try to tighten the muscles of a leg and bring it up. Count till 10 and bring it down. Continue this for 5 times each for both the legs.

Sitting up partially strengthens the abdomen muscles. Lie on the back and keep the knees bent. Raise the head and shoulder above the floor and try to reach the knees with hands. Leg rising also benefits stomach and hip muscles.

Exercises to minimize the back pain:
An aerobic conditioning program for 30 minutes, thrice a week is ideal for overall fitness. Recommended aerobic exercise includes Bicycling, swimming and brisk walking. Aggravation of low back pain can happen if step aerobics and exercises like jumping and running are practiced. Aerobic exercises make the heart and other muscles consume oxygen more efficiently.

Swinging back legs could strengthen the muscles of hip and back. Stand in the back of a chair and raise a leg up and down without bending the knee. Repeat this for each leg.Posture training for sitting, standing, sleeping and even during motion is needed if posture is a factor. The type of shoes viz. High Heels that are worn can also affect the posture by adding more stress on the lower back by changing the posture. Stretching exercises can be done for keeping the muscles flexible and less prone to injury.

Physical therapy:
There are different forms of physical therapy viz. Passive Physical therapy and Active Physical therapy. Passive physical therapy includes Heat/Ice packs, TENS units and Iontophoresis. Active Physical therapy is the exercises like Stretching for back pain exercise, Low-impact aerobic conditioning and strengthening for back pain exercise.

While there are merits if a pattern of good conditioning is followed the wrong type of exercise may actually worsen the low back pain. Activities that pass on too much stress on the back like lifting heavy weights, jumping, running, step aerobics and climbing are not advised. Slow Cycling on a recumbent stationary bike can also relieve back stress. To sum up, exercise will decrease the severity and frequency of lower back pain and can be prevented when a comprehensive exercise program is followed.

Top 7 Tips to Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Author: Raymond Lee

Most people think insomnia means chronic sleeplessness that keeps you up all night. Actually, insomnia means any sleep problem. Occasional late-night wake-ups with trouble going back to sleep are not as trying as chronic insomnia, but they are still a threat to well-being. About 65 million American adults have trouble sleeping. For one-quarter of them, the problem is chronic and costly. Americans spend about $15 billion a year on sleeping pills and physician care for insomnia. When people do mention sleep problems to their doctors, two-thirds of physicians prescribe sleeping pills. Sleep medications can relieve occasional insomnia, and sleeping pills are not the best way to go. Natural approaches work better over the long haul. Here are some tips to consider your better, more restful sleeps.

1. Get Regular
Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends. Many people need regular sleep/wake cycles and find their sleep seriously disturbed if they don’t stick to them. Sleep/wake regularity is especially helpful for what is known as Sunday night insomnia – a surprisingly common inability to fall asleep as the work week is about to begin. Most people assume they are simply anxious about returning to work on Monday. In fact, Sunday night insomnia typically strikes those who stay up unusually late on Friday and Saturday nights and get up late Saturday and Sunday mornings. By Sunday night, they set their internal clock to a later hour and in a phenomenon similar to jet lag, they can’t fall asleep Sunday night until way past their weekday bedtime. Retiring and rising earlier on weekends usually resolves the problem.

2. Pamper Yourself
You spend one-third of your life in bed. Invest in that time and you will probably sleep better. Get comfortable pillows and sheets. Test different types of mattresses. If you have arthritis or a bad back, try extra pillows or specially shaped therapeutic pillows. If heartburn is a problem, elevate the head of your bed a few inches.

3. Reduce Stimulant Comsumption
Caffeine and other stimulants cause more sleep problems than most people realize. Many insomnias are exceptionally sensitive to caffeine and have trouble sleeping after one cup of tea or a chocolate bar in the afternoon. Caffeine is an ingredient in many drugs and soft drinks in addition to coffee, tea, and chocolate. Drugs may also contain non-caffeine stimulants. Ask your physician or pharmacist about the possible stimulant effects of every medication you take.

4. Adopt Bedtime Rituals
Bedtime rituals are a way to wind down and mark the boundary between waking and sleeping. Most people change into pajamas and brush their teeth. If you have trouble sleeping, add a few more rituals to your transition period: Take a hot bath, drink a cup of herb tea or do some light reading. But steer clear of the late TV news. It is usually filled with disturbing images that might keep you awake.

5. Limit Alcohol
Many doctors used to advise people who could not sleep to drink a cocktail or glass of wine before bedtime. But many people find that drinking within a few hours of retiring keeps them from sleeping and in nearly everyone, drinking late in the evening produces troubled, fragmented sleep.

6. Try Deep Relaxation
In addition to their ritual value, relaxation techniques also help minimizes the stress that contributes to sleep problems. Aromatherapy, biofeedback, deep breathing exercise, listening to music, massage, meditation, and yoga can all help in overcoming insomnia. Just don’t do any kind of strenuous exercise within a few hours of bedtime. It has a short-term stimulant effect.

7. Get Out Of Bed
This sounds ridiculous, but many people with insomnia believe that the longer they stay in bed, the more they will sleep. Not so. If a person who needs seven hours a night stays in bed for nine, the seven hours get spread thinly over the nine and sleep becomes more troubled and less restful.
