Yoga is, basically, a series of ancient practices that started in India. Since its beginnings and regardless of what branch of yoga is involved, the final purpose of yoga refers to achieving freedom from worldly pain as well as reaching an ongoing cycle of life and death. However, it has obviously shifted its sense of mainly being a spiritual practice through its widespread popularity and with the help of a yogi anybody has access to the health benefits and relaxation that yoga offers.
This is probably one of the best options nowadays in terms of relaxation for people with a stressful schedule. Yoga does, however, require that you perceive it seriously and rigorously. First of all, there’s more to it than people in spandex you see on TV in complicated, twisted positions. It’s a demanding process that’s linked to more than a single aspect of one’s lifestyle. It requires a lot of discipline and commitment. However, if you decide to take the yogi’s advice and realize the implications of yoga as to a safe diet, mental relaxation and so on and so forth, you’ll surely make the best of the health benefits it has to offer. In any case, remember to undertake plenty of documentation and explore all possible means of informing yourself before jumping to any conclusions and deciding in favor of one yoga style or another.
However, nothing is more appreciated like the actual health benefits which yoga can bring a person. The key element here is stress. A lot of the common diseases are somehow related to nervous tension and practicing yoga deals with the problem from its very core. Needless to say, on the long term, it also helps with illnesses that are not necessarily related to it, such as spine issues. Still, it’s advisable that you make use of yoga as an alternative treatment, instead of relying on it exclusively.
Health benefits stretch, though, further than the everyday use of the term. It’s also a matter of mental health and within mere weeks of rigorous yoga you’ll be able to see results regarding your life quality you never thought of.
If your interest in yoga has already been aroused, you should also consider Pilates. It’s more of an alternative form of yoga based on nearly the same principles, but the main difference is that it’s much newer. Pilates was developed by a German athlete somewhere around 80 years ago, while yoga is a thousand year old Indian practice with connections in religion and spirituality. They work differently for each individual, so do some research and ask for the advice of an expert.
There are several yoga practices destined to result in health benefits for a more specific range of individuals. For example, during pregnancy, it can ease pain in different parts of the body and even contribute to efficient nourishing of the fetus, as well as deal with anxiety and accomplish a great improvement in your general mood. It can also be an important step in healing mild depressions.
Few things are as rewarding and relaxing as as yoga. With numerous health benefits, it’s accessible to nearly anyone willing to dedicate themselves to this ancient Indian practice. General improvements in body flexibility, concentration and performance won’t fail to appear.

Skin Care in Ayurveda
Skin is the seat of a sense organ. The senses of touch, temperature, pain, pressure are felt by it. A healthy skin always looks attractive even when devoid of make up.
The first step in the holistic ayurvedic approach to skin care is finding out your ayurvedic skin type.
Vata skin is in generally dry, thin, delicate and cool to the touch, easily gets dehydrated, and is very vulnerable to the influence of dry windy weather. Vata skin may age faster, and tends to be dry, rough and flaky when out of balance.
Pitta skin type tends to be fair, sensitive, soft, warm, and of medium thickness. Less tolerance to hot food, less tolerance to fieriness in temperament. Pitta skin types tend to be more prone to freckles and moles than the other skin types. When out of balance, Pitta skin can flare up in rashes, rosacea, acne, or sunspots.
Kapha skin tends to have all the qualities of water and earth -- it can be oily, thick, pale, soft, cool and more tolerant of the sun. Kapha skin tends to age slower and form less wrinkles than the other two types. Kapha skin types may struggle with dull complexion, enlarged pores, excessive oil, blackheads, and pimples, moist types of eczema and water retention.
"Combination" skin can be Vata-Pitta, skin that is both dry and sensitive, Kapha-Pitta-skin is oily and sensitive, and Vata-Kapha- skin that is generally dry with some oily zones.
Skin Care tips for your ayurvedic skin type
Vata Skin Care
For Vata skin to stay youthful, skin care products used should be very nurturing. They must include some essential oils or herbs in combination, which can nourish the skin and rehydrate it; otherwise it may be susceptible to wrinkles and premature aging.
Going to bed on time, eating regular meals, and following a regular daily routine are essential components of a holistic approach to Vata skin care, as are eating foods that help balance Vata and nourish the Vata skin.
Pitta Skin Care
The Pitta skin type needs both cooling and nurturing. Use skin care products that help enhance resistance to the sun. Avoid tanning treatments and therapies that expose your delicate, sensitive skin to steam for extended periods of time.
The ayurvedic herb Flame of Forest can help protect Pitta skin from photosensitivity. But like other ayurvedic herbs, it needs to be used in combination with other herbs for a balanced effect on the skin.
Kapha Skin Care
"Kapha skin, because of its thickness and oiliness, is more prone to accumulate ama -- toxins under the skin. People with Kapha skin need to do detoxification on a regular basis, both internal detoxification and external detoxification to flush toxins from the skin," says Mishra.
Scrubbing the skin with gentle exfoliating clay can help external cleansing. Kapha skin types may also need to take herbal formulations to cleanse the skin from within.

Top 10 Profound Health Benefits of Yoga
By: Anmol Mehta
Yoga is currently taking its final exam. Even though this science dates back many thousands of years, it has only recently come to the West. This is where Yoga is being empirically tested.
The Western mind demands results and evidence, if none are produced, the system does not survive. This is a valuable approach and Yoga is currently being put though the rigors of this process. So far Yoga is passing with flying colors. Don't get me wrong, its not that the East did not expect that, its just that this approach filters out the fraudulent and frivolous methodologies, which might otherwise survive simply because of superstition and fear, and the East is just as happy that this is being done as the West. This scrutinizing process results in separating the stones from the diamonds and the diamond that is Yoga is starting to shine though bright and clear.
Over the last three to four decades a great deal of research has been done by the medical community and they now, more and more, recognize the health benefits of Yoga. Below, I will highlight the top 10 health benefits that Yoga bestows and I hope it will inspire all of you to take up this wonderful practice is some capacity and reap the rich rewards as well.
The health benefits have been divided into 3 categories. The Physical Health Benefits of Yoga, Emotional Health Benefits of Yoga and the Mental Health Benefits of Yoga. A short explanation is given along with each benefit to help you understand better the mechanisms that Yoga employs to bestow it.
Physical Health Benefits of Yoga:
1. Energy: Yoga exercises, breath control training (pranayama) and use of yoga body locks (bandhas) all work to activate and balance your energy pathways, giving you the vitality and power you need to maximize your potential.
2. Strength: By strength here we don't just mean physical muscular strength, although that will benefit greatly as well due to the steady holding of yoga poses and the exercises that yoga incorporates, but also the strength of your internal physiological systems. Strength of your immune system, nervous system, digestive system, respiratory system, circulatory system, reproductive system, etc.
3. Healing: The power of Yoga to heal ailments and cure diseases is becoming more and more an integral part of mainstream medical practice and treatment methods. This ability of Yoga to heal also promotes longevity.
4. Flexibility: Yoga postures (asanas) are perhaps the best type of exercises you can do to improve flexibility. Flexibility is essential for avoiding injuries as well as for the health of the joints, tendons and muscles.
Emotional Health Benefits of Yoga:
5. Peace: Yoga meditations and practice methodology promotes a greater awareness and appreciation of the present moment, which calms the mind and allows the peace deep within to surface.
6. Joy: With the maturing of a Yoga practice, the beauty and depth of life become more apparent and the spontaneous joy of existence emerges.
7. Compassion: Yoga values and philosophy, along with the practice of yoga meditations, dissolves one's ego-centric reality, thus developing other mindedness, thoughtfulness, generosity and compassion.
Mental Health Benefits of Yoga:
8. Brain Development: Yoga breathing exercises and yoga meditations develop parts of the brain that are normally dormant. Once these parts are activated the power of intuition, as well as other latent powers are unleashed. In addition as the brain develops so does your intelligence and clarity of thoughts.
9. Concentration: The requirement of many Yoga meditations to keep the mind focused on a single object or mantra (sound vibrations), helps to dramatically increase your power of concentration and focused attention.
10. Awareness: Yoga can simply be called the Science of Awareness. This is its primary purpose. To refine and increase awareness so that you can penetrate the veil of the ordinary dualistic mind and encounter your Divine Nature within.

By: : Foras Aje
The good news is Yoga Exercises could give you all of those when practiced correctly. Moreover, when combined with other forms of body-weight exercises such as Pilates, Hindu-Push Ups (both being direct descendants of Yoga) and Calisthenics, you are definitely bound to see a drastic delay in the whole aging process.
Some yoga poses such as the Sun Salutations, The Shoulder Stand and the Abdominal Lift Exercises in Yoga have been known for centuries to delay aging naturally (of course in an adherence to a proper diet).

Though any vigorous exercise may suffice, Yoga stands unmatched as an anti-aging exercise of physical culture.
Moreover, the yogic diet is an advocated lifestyle of several experts in the drug-free fraternity and let’s not overlook the relaxation that arises from using Yoga poses, especially the Relaxation Pose.
Even religious monks are in on the several benefits of Yoga for anti-aging.
You see two thousand years ago, Tibetan monks claimed that the aging process could be reversed. They developed the Rites, by condensing 21 yoga anti-aging exercises into 5
All in all, just take one look at Madonna, Sting, Russell Simmons or Ricky Martin,
Make-up and photo-retouching aside, these people still look good for their ages and they all (like several people) practice some form of Yoga.
So, if delaying the aging process is an especial goal of yours, you would do very well to do some Yoga. It wouldn’t hurt and possibly could help a whole lot.
Here’s to staying, looking and feeling younger AND to health.

Top 7 Tips To Treat And Prevent Asthma Attacks
by Raymond Lee
Some people describe asthma as feeling like they are trying to breathe though a straw. The description fits perfectly, because during an attack, airways in the lungs squeeze shut, making it difficult to draw in air. At the same time, the narrowed airways become inflamed and filled with mucus, stifling the airways even further. Asthma can be serious - even fatal. But if you can take care of yourself, asthma isn't cause for alarm. Here are some ways to prevent future episodes.
1. Max Out On Magnesium
This essential mineral helps relax the smooth muscles that line airways. People who were getting the most magnesium from foods were the least likely to have wheezing and supersensitive airways. Choose whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds as your best magnesium sources.
2. Consider Antioxidant Protection
Vitamins C and E, the trace mineral selenium and beta-carotene, a pigment found in orange and dark green leafy vegetables, all seem to offer some protection to sensitive lungs. You may want to consider consuming 1,000 to 2,000 milligrams of vitamin C, 400 international units of vitamin E and up to 200 micrograms of selenium a day through diet and supplements.
3. Declare War On Insects
Two kinds of bugs - dust mites and cockroaches - are well-known asthma aggravators. People actually inhale microscopic cockroach parts and dust mite feces, which sets off attacks. It is impossible to get rid of dust mites, which are found in every house and are kicked up through normal household activity. So minimizing their presence by encasing mattresses and pillows in plastic covers and washing your bed linens frequently in hot water. Banishing cockroaches can be a real hassle, too. Keep food in bug-proof tins or the refrigerator, clean up crumbs immediately and never leave cat or dog food out. Fix leaks so that there are no damp spots in your house, since mites require high humidity to live.
4. Stop The Acid
The same backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus that causes heartburn can bring on asthma, especially if you are lying down. People who do a lot of coughing at night are most likely to have this problem. To avoid acid-induced asthma, you can take acid-suppressing drugs, forgo late-night foraging and shed excess weight.
5. Relax With Massage
In one study people with asthma who got weekly 15-minute upper body massages reported drops in chest tightness, wheezing, pain and fatigue. Massage may make you more aware of the stress in your life, and awareness is, for most people, the first step towards reducing stress. Stress often makes asthma symptoms worse.
6. Breathe Better With Yoga
Try exhaling for twice as long as you inhale. This is a yoga breathing technique. To do this easily, breathe in normally, then exhale normally, but as you come to what seems like the end of your exhalation, continue for a bit longer without forcing out the breathe.
7. Turn Off The Fireplace
As cozy as fireplaces and woodstoves may be, they spew pollutants into indoor air. If you are having trouble controlling asthma, you are better off not using either of these in your house.

Basic Yoga Exercises to Brighten Your Day
By: Jimmy Cox
There is a yoga routine you should adopt the moment you have opened your eyes in the morning and are ready to get up.
First of all, learn to wake up properly. Do some stretching. Stretch your arms, yawn several times, stretch your legs, and stretch your whole body. While you are still in bed, do the following stretching exercise:
Keeping your feet together, toe to toe, start to push out the right leg, without raising it off the mattress, as if wanting to lengthen it. The pull will be felt from the hip down and the leg will be momentarily lengthened by an inch or more. Hold your leg in this position while you count to sixty, then relax, allowing the right foot to become even again with the left one. Repeat with the left leg.
This exercise stretches the spinal column and tones up the sympathetic nerves. It has a rejuvenating effect on the entire body. As this is a very potent nerve exercise, you must be careful not to overdo it. Sixty seconds for each leg is the maximum. You may, however, repeat the exercise again in the evening, if you wish. If your mattress is too soft, don't do this in bed, but wait until you are ready to do the other exercises on the floor and simply begin with this one.
Except when in danger or emergency, animals never jump up, but keep yawning and stretching for quite a while after coming awake; then they slowly get up on their feet. Imitate them. When you finally get out of bed, drink a glass of water, but water that is at room temperature, not iced. Drink it after brushing your teeth and cleaning your tongue with a special tongue scraper or with a wash cloth.
Deep Breathing
Yoga emphasizes our relationship to the universe and therefore teaches breathing different from the usual breathing, a breathing that reflects our inner attitude while we are performing it. This attitude is one of devotion toward the communion with the All, and should be maintained all the time.
Now as you sit down on your exercise mat, get ready to start your first real lesson in deep breathing. If for some reason you are unable to sit on the floor, you may sit on a chair or else stand up. Deep breathing can also be done lying down, provided the spine is kept straight. But normally we should do it while sitting cross-legged. If you cannot assume the Lotus Pose as yet, cross your legs in any way easiest for you.
First check your posture. The spine should be straight, the head erect, hands on knees, eyes closed. Now concentrate on the pharyngeal space at the back wall of your mouth and, slightly contracting its muscles, begin to draw in the air through that space as if you were using a suction pump. Do it slowly and steadily, letting the pumping sound be clearly heard. Don't use the nostrils; remember that they remain inactive during the entire respiration process.
When inhaling let your ribs expand sideways like an accordion - beginning with the lower ones, of course. The chest and shoulders should remain motionless. The entire inhalation should be done gently and effortlessly. When it has been completed pause for a second or two, holding the breath. Then slowly begin breathing out. The exhalation is usually not as passive as the inhalation. You use a slight, a very slight, pressure to push the air out - although it feels as though you pressed it against the throat like a hydraulic press.
The upper ribs are now contracted first, the nostrils remain inactive and the chest and shoulders motionless. At the end of the exhalation, pull in the stomach a little so as to push out all the air. You have just taken your first deep breath. You are now ready to face the day.

How Can Yoga Contribute Towards Clearer - Healthier Skin?
By: Louise Forrest
Yoga and its Benefits for the Skin. Long gone are the days when yoga was considered as strange and something that only few people practiced. Today, thanks to many celebrities, the practice of yoga is extremely popular and it is helping people everywhere to obtain a healthy mind and body. There are many reasons why yoga is good for the body and here you will find just a few of them.
Helping You to Relax:
Yoga is well known for its relaxation techniques and it really does help to reduce stress. Stress is a common factor in dull, tired skin, and by reducing that stress you will no doubt end up with clearer skin.
The reason stress contributes so much towards unhealthy skin is because it can cause blemishes and it can make us lose out on sleep. When you are constantly stressed, your mind is never relaxed. This means that you could potentially spend up to hours at a time, tossing and turning, trying desperately to sleep.
So, by participating in yoga the breathing techniques associated with the practice will not only help to keep your heart happy and healthy, but it will also cut down your stress levels, bring down your blood pressure, and help you to have blemish free skin!
Helping You to Sleep:
Not getting enough sleep is one of the most common reasons why people suffer from bad skin. It really is true that we need at least eight hours beauty sleep in order for our skin to repair the daily damage done to it and to prepare for the day ahead. If you do not get enough sleep your skin will often look dull and tired.
Yoga works every muscle in the body and that really can tire you out. So, when it comes to bed time you should be really tired. If not, another way yoga helps you to sleep is it relieves any tension built up within your body and it gets rid of stress.
Helping People Who Suffer From Acne:
Whilst many experts say that acne is often helped with exercise, it is not always true. Sweat can often irritate acne and so really active exercise is often ruled out. This is where yoga can come in.
Yoga is a really strenuous exercise which works every muscle in the body, however it is done quite slowly and so you do not really sweat as much as you would do with other more active exercises. This is great news for people with acne as it can often provide really good benefits for the condition, and it can sometimes also even clear it up.
Helping to Keep the Skin Firmer:
Yoga is by far one of the best exercises to keep the skin firm and supple and even people in their later years, enjoy the benefits of younger looking skin thanks to yoga.
As every muscle in your body is worked, it helps to keep them toned and that in turn keeps the skin firm.
Overall, yoga is excellent for the skin and it can also provide good benefits for people with blemishes and even acne. As well as benefits to the skin, yoga provides benefits for the whole body and it can be practiced by both males and females. So, if you are looking for an exercise to keep you in shape, decrease your stress and keep your skin looking healthy and toned no matter what your age, yoga is definitely for you!

7 Yoga Tips
By: Daniel Arnau
Your yoga practice and the way you breathe are intertwined. You won’t fully experience the benefits of yoga without first learning how to breathe properly. Yoga has been proven to relieve stress by using exercises that unify the mind, body, and spirit.
1. Talk to your doctor and explain what type of yoga poses you intend to practice. Show your doctor pictures of the poses for illustration. Your doctor may rule out specific poses if you have high blood pressure, glaucoma, a history of retinal detachment, or heart disease. Make sure you follow your doctor’s recommendations.
2. Find a yoga class that best fits your abilities. Talk to prospective teachers, and decide whether of not you can handle a program before you sign up. It’s very important to take it one step at a time. Try a few beginner classes before you attempt more vigerous classes. Don’t move ahead too quickly. Allow your body to adjust to your exercises.
3. Listen to your body and be aware of your physical abilities. You don't want to hurt yourself. Make sure the instructor understands your level of experience and any limitations you may have. Don’t allow anyone to push you ahead too quickly. Remember, this is supposed to be fun and relaxing.
4. If you can’t find a class that meets your needs, you can always practice yoga at home. There are many books, programs, and tapes available to help you get started. Search for the best products on the Internet and read reviews. Talk to others for recommenations.
5. Why not try private lessons? You can book some one-on-one sessions with a teacher in your area. Most yoga instructors offer private classes or can help you design your own program. This is a good way to get started. You can always take group lessons or practice at home after you’ve had private lessons and learned the basics.
6. Find a yoga buddy. It’s nice to practice with someone and it will help reduce injuries. It’s also a great way to keep up your enthusiasm and interest.
7. Eat lightly before practice. Wait at least two hours after meals before yoga class or practice. An empty stomach is best, but don’t let yourself get too hungry to think. You won't be able to focus on the poses or enjoy yourself during the relaxation or meditation exercises.
When you learn how to breathe, you will find that it comes naturally in your yoga practice and in time, will continue in your everyday life.

The Purpose Of Yoga
By: Donovan Baldwin
Yoga, or its ancestor, first appeared somewhere around 5,000 years ago. Since then, it has gradually evolved into the modern form. However, its "modern form" is neither completely modern, nor is it the only form of yoga. In the western world, when we speak of "yoga" we are commonly referring to Hatha Yoga, a branch of yoga introduced by Yogi Swatmarama in the 15th century. To keep it simple, Yogi Swatmarama saw Hatha Yoga, not as an end in itself, but as part of a pathway to a higher state on the yoga journey. Hatha Yoga concentrates more on the physical training, conditioning, and "preparation" aspects of yoga. So, as we talk about the purposes of "yoga", please keep in mind that we are talking only about one portion of the entire range of disciplines encompassed by the word.
We sometimes hear of someone who learned to become more relaxed by the practice of yoga. Or, maybe we have heard of someone who became more invigorated and energetic as a result of their practice. Perhaps someone else was able to play a competitive sport better than before they began practicing yoga, or perhaps they were able to lay aside the competitive aspect of their nature that had been driving them into bad health and broken relationships. We may have even heard all of these types of stories. I have! This, and all the claims made about the practice of yoga, creates a very confusing picture even in the minds of those willing to believe what they hear. For those who have doubts already, the multitude of claims can sound like those of an old-timey snake oil salesman.
Actually, research conducted by many prestigious organizations and institutions has confirmed that a regular practice of yoga can actually produce all of these effects and more. While some uncertainty exists in some areas as to exactly WHY yoga is so effective in relation to a given situation, condition, or result, the common ground seems to be that it works.
While yoga can return the same physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits as any other physical training or exercise program, it also produces a blend of positive results that allow the individual organism to integrate the effects and actions of several different systems to produce a whole overall outcome which seems to be greater than the sum of its parts. For example, the increased ability to relax may help the ability to perform, the strengthening of the physical body helps the emotional output to be brought under control. All specific benefits of yoga, when practiced regularly, work together for the overall benefit of the person.
It appears that this synergistic outcome combines the more specific benefits associated with any regular exercise program, with meditation, with deep breathing, with the "exercise" or "massage" of internal organs normally ignored by standard physical activities to produce the confusing array of "positive" outcomes mentioned at the beginning of this article.
Whatever the other positive outcomes of a regular yoga practice may be, its effect on physical and mental health in general should not be ignored. Yoga has been found to have a positive effect on such conditions as asthma, respiratory difficulties, high blood pressure, pain management, back pain, arthritis, and weight loss. Psychologically, it tends to increase self awareness, create a positive self-image, and uplift the spirits of the participant. Many who come to yoga for the first time find themselves with a "new lease on life" as one practitioner put it to me and find themselves trying new experiences, finding new friends, and taking control of a life which had, up until then, been in control of them.
Apparently, yoga has the potential of being effective in many aspects of life and health, and can, in most cases at least, mold itself to your needs. It might be said that the purpose of yoga is to serve in whatever capacity it is needed.

Improve Your Breathing with Yoga
By: Zach Thompson
With all the stress and physical abuse we put our bodies through on a daily basis it is good to know that there is an alternative. Yoga is an ancient form of art that has been practiced for many centuries to improve the overall health and well being of a person. It includes many exercises or positions to help the mind and body heal and work in unison.
Different exercises work on different areas of the body. This allows you to pinpoint certain areas or work on your entire body. Examples of postures would be stretching exercises like the Downward dog, this strengthens muscles and can help with joint problems like arthritis. At first these exercises are a little difficult but as your muscles become stronger and you become more experienced they will become easier.
Yoga is a discipline that encompasses your entire body and mind. In order to be able to carry out your exercises or postures you will need to learn the art of breathing correctly. As you learn Pranayama, or breathing exercises they will help you to relax and energize your body to keep it in balance. This promotes good health and a sense of well being.
There are many benefits of this type of Yoga exercises:
The correct way of breathing: surprisingly enough most of us normally use just a small part of our lungs when we breathe. Pranayama teaches you to use your entire lung capacity. This will allow more oxygen to get to your body and especially your brain; this will contribute to an improvement in your health. Here are a few ways this will help you:Correct breathing will help you to reduce wastes and toxins in the body. This in turn will improve health and digestion. It will also help relieve stress and tension by helping you relax. Will help you have more control over your physical well being and emotions helps you think better.
There are two types of Pranayama exercises. One set will calm and cool your body. An example of this would be Sit Cari Pranayama. Other exercises will warm and energize your body. Examples of these are Kapalabhati Pranayama and Ujjayi Pranayama. Different conditions of the body will require different exercises.
This is a skillful discipline and proper guidance with knowledge is required to do Pranayama exercises. Children below the age of 16 are not advised to do these exercises. In fact these exercises can be detrimental to your health if not done correctly.
There are certain circumstances when this discipline should not be done: If you feel that you are having any breathing problems do not continue with Pranayama exercises. It should not be done if you are hungry or directly after food. You should not do this if you are depressed.
There are different types of this discipline. Each type has different effects on your mental and physical well being and is aimed at a different purpose and goals. Some exercises are performed with open nostrils, for example Ujjayi and Viloma and others are regulated with the fingers.
To really benefit from Pranayama or breathing exercises it is necessary to do the other exercises or postures in Yoga and to take advantage of the complete discipline. In this way you will be able to take care of your overall health and well being.

Yoga is an ancient Indian practiced designed to promote relaxation, health and flexibility. By using a series of poses and breathing techniques, yoga also works on the practitioner's balance, strength and overall health.
Yoga has been shown to reduce blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels, diminish back pain and improve cardiovascular health. Depending on the type of yoga you do, yoga can be an aerobic, anaerobic or stretching exercise or all three.
Essentially, yoga tones and stretches all your joints and muscles. Not only does this unique form of exercise deliver physical benefits, it also reduces stress while promoting relaxation. When it comes to aging well, yoga is one of the best activities you can do.
Some types of yoga are more strenuous than others, so before you sign up for a class or purchase a yoga DVD, you may want to make sure you're choosing a yoga program that's right for you. Keep reading to learn about the five major types of yoga:
Integral Yoga: This is a basic and very gentle form of yoga with a set pattern of postures. The emphasis is on pose control, relaxation and deep meditation. Integral yoga is perfect for beginners.
Ashtanga Yoga: You may see Ashtanga yoga listed as power yoga. This type of yoga moves fast and focuses on a continuous flow of movement through the traditional yoga poses. By incorporating strength, aerobic exertion and flexibility, Ashtange embodies all three types of exercise.
Kundalini Yoga: This form of yoga is extremely spiritual and tends to focus predominantly on breathing exercises, chanting, relaxation and meditation.
Iyengar Yoga: Iyengar yoga focuses predominantly on positioning and poses that are precise and correct. Using wooden blocks, buckets or straps, Iyengar concentrates on alignment and the actual structure of a pose. Though slow and steady, Iyengar is not recommended for yoga beginners.
Bikram Yoga: Also known as hot yoga, Bikram yoga is typically done in a room heated to anywhere from 80 to 100 degrees. Vigorous and intense, this form of yoga may be too much for those suffering from respiratory problems, high blood pressure or cardiac issues.
